Aromatics International

I really loved this site, the look is great and they seem to know what their doing :) They are even affiliated with an aromatherapy school.

Here is the e-mail I received from them:

Thank you for your interest in Aromatics International!
We are a small company dedicated to the plants that create the essential oils; and to the people who grow, harvest and distill them.  We work with many small growers and cooperative distillers all around the world.  We have developed wonderful relationships with our distillers over the years.  We generally buy in small quantities in order to preserve freshness.  We have every single batch of oil we buy tested with GC/MS analysis through a lab in France.  Although some companies are testing their oils, we make the results of that test available to everyone on our website.  Regardless of the quantity of essential oil you purchase from us, you have access to the GC/MS.

Our GC tester is Daniel from  the company, Pyrenessences.  Daniel and Francoise have been farmers and distillers for 17 years. They grow and harvest their own organic plant material to distill their essential oils. Francoise makes her own therapeutic products and Daniel is a chemist who analyzes essential oils.
Daniel has a wonderful laboratory with his Gas Chromatographer/Mass Spectrometer equipment. The laboratory also houses a flame ionization detector, and the tools to analyze the physical characteristics of the oils such as the refractive index, density and optical rotation. His analysis reports are excellent. He not only analyzes the oils for his own business but also for many other essential oil companies around the world.  With his sophisticated equipment he is able to analyze 100% of the oil.
On our labels, we provide a batch number, so you can always see the GC/MS, as well as the distillation date.  These coincide with the batch reports provided online beside each specific oil.  These reports are always available for you to see.
We buy essential oils that have been distilled from organically grown plants.  Not every farmer has the organic certification, as that is simply not available to some growers in remote areas, or because they cannot afford the certification. In thee cases, we know they are growing according to organic standards- indeed many growers in many countries do this naturally.  It is important to us to support small growers who put great effort into their crops and oils.
We maintain the quality of the oil by purchasing in small quantities, storing everything in glass in a dark, temperature controlled room. We serve our customers- many of whom are very educated Aromatherapists and consumers of natural products, buy providing the GC/MS analysis which gives you great insight into the variations of an oil from year to year, and assists one in knowing how to use it therapeutically. We are educators at heart, so our website is full of information about every oil, along with professional references to research articles that pertain to a given oil.  We also keep the MSDS reports on file for most of the oils.
We ship via the USPS Priority Mail.  We make every effort to get orders out within 24 hours, many times they ship out the same day they arrive. This translates into getting your oils within 3-4 days within the US.
I am the owner of Aromatics International and am a certified Aromatherapist.  I've also had extensive training in the Chemical aspect of the oils.  I have a deep appreciation for the oils and am a constant student of aromatherapy, always learning more. Aromatics International is very highly regarded in the Aromatherapy world.  Our customers have expressed nothing but gratitude for the oils.  Because the GC reports are available online, you know exactly what you are purchasing before you purchase.  We stand 100% behind our products.

You also asked if we claim to sell Therapeutic Grade essential oils.  I know that this has become an ambiguous term lately.  I might just say that our oils are only the pure plant extract.

I invite you to take a look at our website:  www.aromaticsinternational.com
I hope this helps you to understand a little more about us.  Please do not hesitate to ask more question or clarify anything I have written.
Thanks you again for your interest.

She however forgot to answer the question about endangered essential oils and when I pointed this out she happily e-mailed me back:

Hello,
It's certainly not a bother and I'm sorry I missed this question the 1st time.  We do sell Rosewood which is not an endangered species but  they actually have to kill the tree to  harvest the oil.  It is getting harder and harder to obtain.  However in saying this, the distiller we use for this oil uses responsible farming in that he replants any tree that is used.   The reason Rosewood is so popular is for its high Linalol content.  We do have a Ho Wood that is very similar in chemical composition that we are gravitating towards.  Andrea Butje does extensive teaching through Aromahead.com and talks about this issue.  She is the founder of Aromatics International.

As far as Aromatics Internationals stand on endangered essential oils, we find there is usually a good substitute and we don't carry any of the endangered species.   I hope that answers your question.  I'm also interested in your background, how you use the oils and your stand on this issue.  Maybe if I have a better idea of your needs I can address more of your concerns.

After reading everything she sent me I feel very comfortable buying and having a relationship with this company! They get a **** 1/2 out of 5 untill I get to sample their oils! WONDERFUL COMPANY!

starting a new venture

It is only really early in the morning but I have a great feeling about today. I'm going to go through my e-mails from where I did research a few months ago. I know I will be able to find e-mails from I believe at least eight companies which I can post here for you all to read over the next few days while I do some research on new companies. I'm sure a lot of you will find some of the companies answers very peculiar and interesting perhaps even humorous and his perhaps even my opinions of said answers. Again let me just state that these are my opinions and that this blog is representative of nothing but myself.

Heading to the apothecary.

I e-mailed http://www.anandaapothecary.com/ a little while back and got very speedy and interesting responses. Here are the e-mails I received.

Hi,

My name is Eric, I'm one of the co-owners, along with Tarah Cech. She's the one with the 3 degrees in natural healing: Naturopathic Doctor, Master Herbologist, Master Iridologist with extensive training in essential oils and reflexology -- though I believe I can answer all your questions for you! I'll just answer these in the order asked...

Yes, we're actually dedicated to offering the finest, most therapeutically-potent of every essential oil variety available on the planet. This has been our mission from the start (5 years ago now), and I perhaps if you've read some of our reviews you'll note that our customers feel we've been succeeding in this endeavor.

As noted above, you can see our owner's pedigree.

Our customers are exceptionally appreciative not only of the consistently-high quality of the oils, but in the knowledgeable staff they encounter when contacting us via phone or email. I believe we've been succeeding in our aim to get the best "medicine" to our clients, with a good deal of helpful support -- and from our feedback, possibly more so than many competitors.

I'm not sure what you mean by "how big is our business" - we have enough staff that we meet our customers needs in a timely manner, and that we're able to spend the "manpower" on quality control necessary to meet our aims.

5 years.

We have relationships with distillers and suppliers around the world. It's a feature of the business of essential oils that truly exquisite oils are often produced by small-to-moderate sized distillers and farmers, and yes, it's important to cultivate these relationships to further the mission of consistently supplying oils of the highest grade.

The oils undergo a number of quality control steps - Most are examined via GCMS, either by the producer or by a third party. Aromatic sampling occurs of course - and is one of the most important steps. An experienced nose, and a "tuned-in" individual offers us feedback that's as useful, if not more so, than GCMS analysis (the numbers can tell you some things, but the bottom line is they don't distinguish a good oil from a great one). There's also density and optical rotation analysis done on many oils.

Given the rest of the questions about testing, I'll summarize - if your decision to purchase is hinged on laboratory results, we likely won't be the company for you. We don't send every lot out for 3rd party testing. When we do have such testing done, the analysis is performed by an operator with a very long history and extensive knowledge of what the results of quality oils should be. Data is available on many oils, but not all. We're working on compiling an electronic database of results, but we've been so pleasantly busy as to not have had the opportunity to complete this project yet. The bottom line is that we spend a lot of energy ensuring quality, though we don't tend to rely on numerical data exclusively, or even primarily. We've found selecting the best oils takes the development of personal relationships with the oils, the medicine, the plants, the distillers and the business environment in general.

Oils that are listed on the site as organic are organic, wildcrafted are wildcrafted, and one's noted otherwise may have had plant source raised conventionally, though we do not condone the use of pesticides in any of our products.

All the source information you note is on the site and on the bottles.

MSDS are available if necessary.

Yes, all our oils are therapeutic grade.

And yes, all our oils and products are 100% guaranteed.

The best way to make a final choice of a source for your oils is of course to order samples and experience them for yourself -- this certainly "seals the deal" for the vast majority of our customers.

Please let me know if I can help you further.

All the Best,
Eric

Rosewood - we have a Brazilian that comes from its source as 'renewable resource', indicated to us as being from branch and twig trimmings, not taking down whole trees. But even this has us a little wary, and we're moving to an incredible certified organic Indian source without any of the resource issues.

Sandalwood - The Vanuatu is from cultivated trees, the only in the world. The Australian is from a distiller that works with their government to take the trees in a controlled manner that does not destroy the forests. The Indian is from a 5 year old source before the ban went into effect - we will not be carrying Indian source again when this lot is gone, and didn't carry it for quite some time until we made this single connection from a broker who had purchased the oil many years ago and just held on to it.

Bottom line is we will not knowingly contribute to resource depletion. We're very concerned about the repercussions of the operations of the entire business, not only the source of the oils themselves. We've just partnered with Carbon Fund to contribute to fixing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as fast as we're releasing it (and hopefully faster!)

Now in response to this e-mail I give them a **** out of 5. They sound very good to me, all I need to do is get a sample and test it and then, depending, I would rate them a **** and a half. The only problem I have here is that each batch is not GCMS tested. Unfortunately, to have a better appearance in the field I think we should show that we are very picky when it comes to our oils. However I personally do trust "the nose knows". I trust my nose and that is why it is the deciding factors in my reviews. So please don't think I'm saying any company that DOESN'T test is bad, its just for the scope of this blog, it does not meet my standards for a PERFECT company. They have a very nice staff and I WILL do some kind of business with them.

Waiting...

Well I haven't heard from either of my investigative venues...time to move to calling :)

***UPDATE***
I just called The Essential Oil Company and no one was available to take my call, I called during normal business hours and left a message.

I also just called the only telephone number I could find on Dr. Elizabeth Joan Barice and the line was busy, Considering the weekend is coming up It doesn't look like i'm going to get many answers this week. I'm going to keep trying to get a hold of Dr. Barice and see if I can get an e-mail that is working, so far I've found a gmail account for her and a yahoo. I e-mailed the gmail account hoping that was the most recent but I still haven't received and e-mail so we'll see! Stay tuned you guys! I'm sure we'll have answers soon!

***UPDATE 2***

I finally got through to Dr. Barice! She seems like SUCH a wonderful and sweet woman! She didn't give me much information, apparently she has been "absent" as of late, perhaps a vacation? Which is apparently why she hasn't answered e-mails. She seems to use a lot of natural modalities in her practice and she did state quite a few times that "you need to know how to use the oils" so this gives me hope. So far, I give Dr. Barice *** out of 5. I am to get back with her in a month, so around new years we may have more answers from here, if she doesn't find my e-mail before then! WONDERFUL!!!  PROGRESS!!!
